First, make sure you have unlocked you companion for each character that you would like to farm with. Each companion has a quest you must complete in order to unlock the companion.
Bastion: can be found along the Southwest coast of Blackwood in Deepscorn Hollow. Here you will find the quest “Competition and Contracts” which will unlock Bastion once you have completed the objective.
Mirri: can be found in Doomvault Vulpinaz in Northern Blackwood. Finish the quest “Shattered and Scarred” in order to unlock Mirri.
Next, you will need to summon your companion. Do this by going into your collections menu. Select allies, then select companions to activate him/her. You can only have one companion active at a time.
Now you’re ready to start farming! You can get a companion drop from killing enemies throughout Tamriel, but you will want to come up with a farming method to increase your overall productivity. Since your best chance of getting a drop is from named bosses, you will want to find a rotation with decent spawn time and minimal traffic. The best way to do this is to find a public dungeon with low population and go from boss to boss. Otherwise, I would suggest picking a zone and going in a loop, killing the overland bosses. NOTE: Always have your companion active while farming, or else you will not get a companion gear drop when you kill the boss!
